Volunteer
Simply put, Kentucky’s 4-H program wouldn’t exist without its thousands of volunteers. In every part of the state, 4-H volunteers coordinate community clubs, lead projects, and help plan and conduct local, regional, state, and national 4-H events.
Volunteering with 4‑H
People volunteer in many ways depending on their interests, their skills, and the time they can devote to 4-H.
As a 4-H volunteer you might:
- Help 4-Hers develop life skills by leading a 4-H project in a subject area that excites you—forestry, fishing, fashion, foods, farm animals, and many more project specialties.
- Teach workshops at a summer camp or special event for youth or military families.
- Judge at the county fair or at livestock events.
- Manage a 4-H community club. Schedule club meetings, train club officers, recruit parents to help out, be the communication link between your club and the extension office.
- Be an Operation: Military Kids volunteer. Work with local youth groups to plan opportunities for youth from military families.
- Host visiting international youth or their chaperones as part of the 4-H International Exchange Program.
- Help with 4-H fundraising.
- Teach horse projects or work at horse events or contests.
- Become a certified shooting sports instructor.
Becoming a volunteer involves a structured application and screening process to help ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone involved.
- Apply
Prospective volunteers receive and complete a Volunteer Application Packet, which is returned to the Extension office. - Review & Screening
The application is reviewed, and required background checks are completed. References are contacted, and an interview may be conducted. - Approval Decision
An internal committee reviews all materials and determines volunteer eligibility. Applicants are notified of acceptance or non‑acceptance. - Onboarding & Training
Accepted volunteers complete orientation and any required training, certifications, or paperwork before beginning service. - Final Setup
Volunteer records are finalized, and enrollment is completed in the volunteer management system.
Specific instructions, timelines, and required forms will be shared with applicants during the process.
Eligibility to Volunteer
Individuals are eligible to apply to become an accepted volunteer with Kentucky 4-H in the county in which they live, work, or their dependents live or attend school. Individuals who are accepted volunteers and wish to volunteer outside of the county in which they are accepted must receive approval from the County 4-H Councils and Extension Agents with 4-H responsibilities in both counties. Exceptions to this policy should be submitted to both County 4-H Councils and Extension Agents with 4-H responsibilities. Volunteers that have been dismissed or are not in good standing in a county will generally be ineligible to volunteer in another county. Exceptions may be requested through the Extension Agent with 4-H responsibilities by contacting the Area Extension Director and the state Volunteer Specialist.

Volunteer Policies & GuidelinesVolunteering has brought so much joy to my life. As my kids have grown I now take my grandkids to club meetings and camp. Having my campers come up to me in public giving me a hug gives me great satisfaction knowing that I have touched their lives in a meaningful way.
